A Cold Rolled (C.R.) steel round bar is a steel bar manufactured through a cold-finishing process that provides improved dimensional accuracy, a smoother surface finish and, depending on the grade and manufacturing process, enhanced mechanical properties compared to hot rolled steel.

Thanks to their smoother finish, excellent straightness and tighter dimensional tolerances, cold rolled steel round bars are particularly well suited for mechanical applications and precision machining.

They are commonly used to manufacture shafts, axles, machined parts, mechanical components and a wide range of industrial equipment.

Unlike hot rolling, which shapes steel while it is at high temperatures, cold rolling is performed on steel that has already been hot rolled and is then further processed at room temperature to improve dimensional accuracy, straightness and surface finish.

Hot Rolled (H.R.) Steel Round Bar

  • Rougher surface finish
  • Wider dimensional tolerances
  • Suitable for structural and general-purpose applications
  • Generally more economical

Cold Rolled (C.R.) Steel Round Bar

  • Smooth, uniform surface finish
  • Tighter dimensional tolerances
  • Better straightness
  • Ideal for machined parts and precision applications

The choice between hot rolled and cold rolled steel round bars depends primarily on your project requirements. When dimensional accuracy, surface finish and machinability are important, cold rolled steel round bars are generally the preferred choice.

At Groupe David, cold rolled steel round bars are available in several grades to meet a wide range of manufacturing and mechanical performance requirements.

1018 Steel

  • Low-carbon steel
  • Good machinability
  • Good weldability
  • Commonly used for general mechanical parts and fabrication applications

1045 Steel

  • Medium-carbon steel with greater strength than 1018
  • Good wear resistance
  • Suitable for shafts, axles and mechanical components requiring higher strength

1144 Steel

  • Excellent machinability
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Good mechanical strength
  • Recommended for precision parts and mechanical shafts

4140 Steel

  • High-strength alloy steel
  • Excellent mechanical strength and fatigue resistance
  • Suitable for demanding industrial applications and heavily loaded components

C12L14 Steel

  • Excellent machinability
  • Ideal for high-production machining operations
  • Commonly used to manufacture complex precision-machined parts

The choice of steel grade depends primarily on the required mechanical properties, machining operations and the intended application.

At Groupe David, cold rolled steel round bars are available with the following specifications:

  • Standard lengths: between 10 and 14 feet or between 18 and 22 feet
  • Available diameters: starting at 1/8″

A wide range of diameters is available to meet the needs of manufacturing, industrial and mechanical fabrication applications.

Custom cutting services are also available to meet your project requirements.

Cold rolled steel round bars are commonly used in applications where dimensional accuracy, surface quality and machinability are essential, including:

  • Mechanical shafts and axles
  • Custom machined parts
  • Machinery components
  • Industrial equipment
  • Mechanical assemblies
  • Tooling and jigs
  • Automotive components
  • Manufacturing projects requiring high precision

Their characteristics make them a preferred material for manufacturers and machine shops.

The selection depends primarily on the application, the required mechanical properties and the planned manufacturing operations.

Steel grade

  • 1018 for general applications requiring good machinability
  • 1045 when greater mechanical strength is required
  • 1144 for parts requiring dimensional stability and precision
  • 4140 for heavily loaded applications
  • C12L14 when maximum machinability is the priority

Diameter

The required diameter should be selected according to:

  • The mechanical loads to be supported
  • The dimensions of the finished part
  • Design and machining requirements

Length

Available lengths vary depending on the selected diameter and steel grade.

Machinability

  • Steels such as 1018 and C12L14 are often preferred when ease of machining is an important consideration.

Our team can help you select the cold rolled steel round bar best suited to your application.

Pricing varies depending on several factors:

  • Selected steel grade
  • Bar diameter
  • Required length
  • Order quantity
  • Required cutting or processing services
  • Steel market fluctuations
