A steel plate is a flat and rigid steel product available in various sizes and thicknesses, designed for structural, industrial, mechanical, or fabrication applications. Thicker and more robust than a steel sheet, a plate is used when high strength, excellent stability, and long-term durability are required.

Steel plates are available in multiple grades (A36, 44W, 50W, 60W, 4140) to meet the needs of construction, mechanical engineering, transportation, machinery, and many other sectors.

For specific requirements, you may also consider:

The main difference between the two products is thickness.

  • Steel sheet: generally thin, flexible, and easy to bend or form. Commonly used for light applications (cladding, panels, ducts, general fabrication).
  • Steel plate: thicker, much more rigid, and designed for heavy loads, mechanical parts, structural components, reinforced flooring, or industrial applications.

At many steel distributors, a piece is considered to transition from “sheet” to “plate” at around 3/16’’ (≈4.8 mm) thick.

Steel plates are offered in a wide range of grades to accommodate very different requirements:

  • A36 – The most common grade: easy to weld, great for general fabrication.
  • 44W / 50W / 60W – Structural grades offering increased strength for demanding applications.
  • 4140 – High-strength alloy steel ideal for mechanical parts, shafts, gears, and components subjected to heavy stress.

Your selection will depend on load requirements, mechanical resistance, and the intended application.

Steel plates come in a variety of standard formats.

Common sizes:

  • 4′ x 8′ → ≈ 122 x 244 cm
  • 4′ x 10′ → ≈ 122 x 305 cm
  • 4′ x 12′ → ≈ 122 x 366 cm
  • 5′ x 10′ → ≈ 152 x 305 cm
  • 5′ x 12′ → ≈ 152 x 366 cm
  • Other sizes available on request

Available thicknesses:
From 3/16’’ (≈4.8 mm) up to 2’’ (≈50.8 mm) and more, depending on requirements (see page 37 of the catalog).

These options allow you to choose the plate with the appropriate strength and rigidity for your project.

Yes. Steel plates can be precisely cut to your required dimensions before delivery.

This option is ideal for:

  • Obtaining a ready-to-install format
  • Reducing in-shop machining operations
  • Improving handling and transport
  • Minimizing material waste

Steel plates are suitable for a large variety of applications, including:

  • Manufacturing mechanical parts, bases, and supports
  • Machinery repair and fabrication
  • Industrial flooring, walkways, and platforms
  • Heavy construction, structures, and frameworks
  • Cutting plates for transformation or custom fabrication
  • Any project requiring strength, stability, and long-term durability

Depending on the grade, a plate may be selected for its structural properties, mechanical performance, or abrasion resistance.

Pricing depends on several factors:

  • Grade (A36, 44W, 50W, 60W, 4140)
  • Selected size
  • Thickness
  • Quantity ordered
  • Any custom cutting required

For an exact price, it is recommended to request a quote including all these specifications.
